Urgent and Immediate Appeal to Provide Medical Treatment for Political Activist and Human Rights Defender Mazyad Saqf Al-Hait in Barghasha Prison – Jenin

“Lawyers for Justice” group is following with grave concern what the political activist and human rights defender, Mazyad Saqf Al-Hait, is being subjected to. He was detained on 17/6 on the grounds of an imprisonment order for non-payment of a debt.

According to his statement, he was arrested from the intensive care unit (ICU) at Nablus Specialized Hospital, where he was receiving treatment following a suspected stroke in the artery feeding the neck and brain, without being allowed to complete the necessary treatment. He was subsequently transferred to the Nablus detention center, where he reported being subjected to assault due to his inability to stand during the roll call as a result of his health condition. This according to his claimed to fractured ribs, and he continues to suffer from severe pain and a deterioration in his health status.

He also stated that he was later transferred to Barghasha Prison near the city of Jenin, instead of being kept in Nablus Prison, which is closer to his family’s place of residence, considering this transfer to be a punitive measure based on his political views.

“Lawyers for Justice” group emphasizes that all persons deprived of their liberty enjoy the right to receive necessary healthcare and protection from torture and ill-treatment, in accordance with the Palestinian Basic Law and relevant international conventions.

Accordingly, “Lawyers for Justice” group launches an urgent appeal to the Directorate of Correction and Rehabilitation Centers and the Palestinian Ministry of Interior, demanding the following:

  • Providing urgent and necessary medical treatment to the activist Mazyad Saqf Al-Hait, and transferring him to a specialized hospital to complete his treatment and undergo the necessary medical examinations without any delay.
  • Ensuring he receives appropriate healthcare consistent with his medical condition, and not subjecting him to any procedures that could aggravate his health status.
  • Opening an independent and serious investigation into the allegations of torture and ill-treatment that he reported being subjected to during his detention, and holding anyone proven to be involved accountable.
  • Ensuring respect for his legal and human rights, and safeguarding his dignity as well as his physical and psychological integrity in accordance with the law and international standards.

The group reiterates that the right to health and medical care is an inherent right of every person deprived of their liberty, and that depriving a detainee of treatment or delaying its provision may constitute a gross violation of human rights that warrants legal accountability.
