Statement Issued by Lawyers for Justice Group Regarding the Trial of Activist Mohammad Al-Aruri

Lawyers for Justice group is following the developments in the trial of activist Mohammad Al-Aruri, a member of the Palestinian National Council and Director of the Legal Department at the General Union of Palestinian Workers, which was held today the Ramallah Magistrate’s Court.

During the session, the court listened to the defense statement presented by activist Mohammad Al-Aruri. Furthermore, both the Public Prosecution and the defense lawyers from Lawyers for Justice group declared the conclusion of their evidence. The court subsequently decided to adjourn the case to a session to be held on September 10, 2026, for the presentation of the Public Prosecution’s closing argument.

Lawyers for Justice group emphasizes that the arrest and trial of activist Mohammad Al-Aruri came against the backdrop of his trade union and human rights activism in advocating for workers’ causes and defending their rights. Meanwhile, the Public Prosecution continues to prosecute him on the charge of “insulting the President of the Authority,” alongside other charges related to exercising the right to freedom of opinion and expression.

While the group affirms that freedom of opinion and expression, as well as trade union work, are rights guaranteed under the Palestinian Basic Law and international human rights conventions to which the State of Palestine has acceded, it renews its call to stop prosecuting activists because of their opinions or peaceful activism, and to ensure respect for public rights, freedoms, and the rule of law.
